| CD34 is a transmembrane glycoprotein expressed by hematopoietic precursor cells, the progenitor cells of the hematopoietic marrow.
CD34 appears to play a role in cell adhesion and inhibition of hematopoiesis. CD34 is also expressed by endothelial cells in capillaries, but not in veins and arteries. It also marks dendritic cells (hepatic portal spaces, type 2 dermal dendrocytes). CD34 is useful in the classification of myeloid and lymphoid neoplasms (myelodysplastic syndromes, acute myeloid leukemia, acute B-lymphoblastic leukemia as well as in spindle cell tumors. He participates in the identification of vascular tumors including Kaposi's disease. CD34 is positive in the majority of dermatofibrosarcomas protuberans, solitary fibrous tumor, lipoma (especially spindle cell lipoma) and liposarcoma. |
